Gasoline is something that many of us do not think of as being harmful, just something that we need to go on with our daily lives. But there are many who are exposed to gasoline on a daily basis, people who work in the production or distribution of gasoline products are at a higher risk of developing illnesses from exposure to the fumes for a prolonged period of time.

There are many ways that we can be exposed to gasoline on a daily basis. We are exposed to gasoline fumes while we are filling up our gas tanks. While we are on the road, we are inhaling gas fumes from other vehicles, and just walking down the street we run the risk of being exposed to fumes from gasoline. While these periodic exposures are not that harmful to us, it would be much worse if we were exposed to the fumes for hours every day as are many of the workers who have to be surrounded by gasoline on a daily basis.

Since gasoline vapors are heavier than oxygen, if gasoline is stored improperly it may cause for the accumulation of dangerous levels of fumes. For that reason it is highly suggested that gasoline not be stored in your basement. The possibility of fumes from the gasoline building up and becoming volatile can result in an explosion if the vapors are exposed to any type of spark or flame like those that are produced by furnaces or water heaters. For your safety and the safety of your family it is recommended that gasoline always be stored outside in a shed or garage.

If you are exposed to gasoline fumes for a short period of time you may begin to experience nose or throat irritation, start to feel dizzy or develop a headache. If any of these symptoms appear you should seek fresh air and get away from the area you were just in.

Prolonged exposure to gasoline fumes can cause damage to the nervous system. While there is no evidence that long term exposure may lead to the development of cancer, it has been shown that long-term exposure to benzene, which is a component of gasoline may cause leukemia.

If any of the symptoms become serious it is important that seek medical attention as soon as possible to alleviate any short term effects of gasoline exposure.
