The real fact is that 99% of all gasoline in the United States is of good quality. Many gasoline, no matter the brand, probably comes from the same source and refined at the same refinery. They are probably even sent out in the same pipeline and stored at the same storage terminal.

So what is the difference, if any, between gasoline brands? It's the additives that are added to the gasoline. All gasoline in the United States contains additives to meet EPA federal standards, even the cheap gas station gasoline. There is a difference between name brand additives and the generic ones but how much of a difference is there and does it really make a difference to your car's performance?

The additives are added to the gasoline when the gasoline is loaded into tanker trucks right before it is taken to a gas station. Until then, all the gasoline is the same. The amount of additives added varies, but for some brands it's just a quart of additives for 8,000 gallons of gasoline.

What will have the most impact on the gasoline quality is the gas station's tank quality, the tanker truck and the consistency of the suppliers in the chain to keep the quality at a certain standard. That affects the gasoline more than the additives. Consumer Reports tried to test gasoline brand differences but quit when they realized differences were not more than differences caused by factors such as temperature and humidity.

There will be differences in gasoline in different parts of the country. The volatility of gasoline in the winter in Connecticut will be much different than that of gasoline in Arizona. Also states and regions have different regulations and standards concerning the quality of the gasoline. Some areas may require gasoline formulated for lower emissions. You may actually run into a bad batch of gas, but it's due to the individual gas station than the brand.

The best thing to do would be to find a gas station that is convenient for you to fill up at, that is reasonably priced and has a consistent supplier. There really is no reason to change gas stations if you've found one that works for you. But only use the grade of gasoline that your car's manual specifies as that will save you money and headaches down the line.

How do biodiesel prices compare with other fuel costs, mile for mile?

• B100 or 100% biodiesel cost an average of 8.2 cents per mile, and gets:o 37 miles per gallon in the city; o 45 miles per gallon on the highway;

Unleaded gasoline cost an average of 6.9 cents per mile, and gets: o 25 miles per gallon in the city; o 31 miles per gallon on the highway;

• B20 or a mixture of 80% petroleum-based diesel and 20% biodiesel cost 6.0 cents per mile, and gets: o 37 miles per gallon in the city; o 45 miles per gallon on the highway;

• Conventional, petroleum-based diesel cost an average of 5.2 cents per mile, and gets: o 38 miles per gallon in the city; o 46 miles per gallon on the highway.

The mileage one gets from using biodiesel as compared with regular, unleaded gasoline more than makes up for the slightly higher biodiesel cost, especially when you consider that biodiesel prices should only go down over time, whereas the cost of crude oil, and therefore the price of gas at the pump, is only expected to rise or, at best, settle off somewhere around current prices.

By the same token, the fact that conventional diesel fuel is the cheapest of all of them and gets the best mileage in no way discounts the cost-effectiveness of using biodiesel. Again, while gas and diesel prices are rising, biodiesel cost is expected to soften. A gallon of biodiesel cost just 5 years ago. At the time of this writing biodiesel cost .30-.50 and is getting lower all the time. Not only that, but biodiesel also runs cleaner than its contemporaries, and cleans and lubricates engines. All of these factors contribute to prolonging engine life and reducing vehicle maintenance costs.

Biodiesel is also good for the U.S. economy. A surge in biodiesel demand, like the one we’re currently experiencing and which is only expected to continue to swell, is expected within the next 10 years to create up to 50,000 new jobs for Americans.

Over the next 5 years, U.S. farmers could see their bottom line increase by as much as billion thanks to biodiesel. How, you ask? In at least two ways. First, if biodiesel takes off (so to speak), feedstock prices for vegetable oils will steadily increase. The price of a bushel of soybeans, for one, is projected to rise by .10 per year if biodiesel overtook diesel and gasoline as our fuel of choice. How Do These Two Engine Types Work?

First, you must understand how a gasoline engine is different from a diesel engine. Fundamentally, a diesel truck motor distinguishes itself by not having spark plugs. In a gasoline engine the spark plugs are used to ignite the mist produced by the fuel injectors, but in a diesel truck engine, pure air compression is used to generate an extreme heat that is used to ignite the fuel sprayed into the cylinder by the fuel injector.

There are two immediate takeaways from this different. First of all, a gasoline engine contains a part a diesel engine does not contain that may experience wear and tear: the spark plug. But on the flip side, the diesel engine must constantly produce, sustain and persevere extreme temperatures.

Different Fuels For Different Engines

As you might imagine from these two different processes, these two engines require different fuels. Standard gasoline is used in standard gas engines, while diesel fuel is used for diesel engines. Diesel fuel is more dense and concentrated than standard gasoline. This has both benefits and drawbacks.

Because the fuel is more dense, the same amount of diesel fuel can generate a greater amount of energy than the same amount of gasoline. This can make modern diesel motors more fuel efficient and allows them to generate significant more torque than standard gasoline engines.

However, this comes at a price. In most cases, diesel fuel is significantly more expensive than standard gas. However, some people, especially people who use trucks in business, still prefer the fuel efficiency and the more steady prices of diesel fuel. Diesel fuel prices don't jump and fall as often or to the same extremes as standard gasoline prices.

Advantages of Diesel Fuel

There are a couple of key advantages to diesel engines compared to gasoline engines. First, because they are built to withstand the higher pressures and higher temperatures required of their basic functionality, they tend to be more robust and thus last much longer than their gasoline counterparts.

Secondly, because of the greater density of diesel fuel and the greater efficiency of the engine design, diesel engines generally produce more torque and are thus greater vehicles for heavy duty work such as hauling and towing.

It turns out that gasoline is more volatile than diesel, not because of what its base consists of, but because of the additives it contains. In addition, vehicles that use diesel engines tend to be more fuel-efficient andproduces less greenhouse gases. In that respect, diesel is more environmentally friendly. Diesel actually produces 15% more in greenhouse gases than gasoline when compared by the litre rather than the gallon. Yet it is through the 20-40% improvement in fuel economy over gasoline that offsets the higher emissions per litre. In actuality, the carbon dioxide emissions are considerably less than gasoline, but diesel does contain 2.778 grams of carbon per gallon, whereas gasoline contains 2.421 grams per gallon. But, again, it is the fuel economy of diesels that accounts for the smaller rate of carbon emissions.

Then again, diesel fuel contains larger quantities of sulfur. The United States has what is considered to be the dirtiest diesel, but as of June1, 2010 this is going to be different. U.S. diesel fuel has a lower measure of ignition quality. This means that when it is cold outside, ignition performance is poor and can result in higher emissions. This is why you see truck drivers idling their trucks all night long in cold weather rather than risk a troublesome start in the mornings.

But, the sulfur in the diesel that is emitted during cold ignitions and long engine idling is still harmful to the environment because the sulfurs prevent the control of diesel particulate emissions through diesel particulate filters. This is changing, though, since new advanced technologies such as nitrogen oxide absorbers are being developed to reduce these emissions.

Water is nearly one thousand times as dense as our air. What this tells us, then, is that a slow moving stream of water is more powerful, in terms of renewable energy than wind. A wave or swell of the sea can deliver many times that energy.

We have many forms of renewable energy water from which to choose.

There are many forms of water energy.

The first type of water energy, and the one we most commonly think of when we think of renewable water power is hydroelectric. This is the power that commonly is created by largehydroelectric dams.

You can also have what are called micro hydroelectric systems. These are small power installations that produces as much as 100 kilowatts of power. The most common places to find these renewable energy sources are water in areas where water is abundant and the hydro system can be used as a remote area power supply RAPS. While there are many RAPS around the globe several are functioning in the Solomon Islands.

Wave power is another way of using water as a renewable energy source. The waves are used to create an up and down affect for pontoons that float in the water. This has just started to be used commercially as renewable energy.

Tides can produce renewable energy as well. As the ocean tides as the water level is raised in the water basin. Then,at low tide the basin water gets discharged through the water turbines. Tidal stream power is different in that it captures the energy produced by the tidal flow. This usually is accomplished through the use of an underwater plant that looks like a small-scale wind turbines. While governments have set up demonstrations for this type of tidal power, any large scale commercialization of this renewable tidal energy would require extensive upfront capital. This has yet to be attempted.

Ocean thermal energy conversion OTEC is yet another form of water energy. OTEC uses the different in temperature between the oceans surface water and the water at deeper points. To do this it uses a cyclic heat engine. This form of renewable energy has had no large scale field tests as yet.

Though nottechnically a form of generating renewable energy the cooling of the water in deep lakes is an efficient way to save energy during the hot summer months. Pipes are submerged and used as heat sinks. The bottom of these lakes typically stays at less than 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

Blue energy, which is really desalination in reverse, is a renewable energy resource still being researched. There is no data at this point to show whether it will work.

Sometimes this question involves a truck that will be used to tow a trailer, and other times it involves what type of motorhome to purchase. Don't buy a diesel unless you plan to put a bunch of miles on it and keep it for a long time. That's the only way you can justify the extra cost of diesel.

Several years ago there was some truth to this somewhat typical response. But things are changing, especially when you're talking about motorhomes. Today, the cost of some gasoline powered motorhomes is about the same asmany of the entry-level diesel motorhomes available on the market. This higher cost is mainly due to advancements in gasoline RV chassis ' design; Gross Vehicle Weight with greater Ratings (GVWR) to accommodate coach designs with 3 and 4 slideouts. And don't forget to factor in the new technology in gasoline engine and transmission design over the past several years.

The old response, of diesels costing more, does hold true with some of the specialized diesel chassis manufacturers, but it's not just the engine that accounts for these higher prices. You are moving to a much higher plateau across the board. For the most part gasoline RV chassis ' are heavy duty truck chassis ' modified for Recreation Vehicle use, whereas many chassis ' are a diesel bus chassis.These bus chassis ' have even greater GVWR 's, air brakes, air ride suspension systems, transmissions, rear mounted larger diesel engines and more. They handle better, ride better and cost more. I always say you get what you pay for.

Other than the cost factor between gas and diesel motorhomes, what are we really talking about when it comes down to gas versus diesel? Say for example in a truck you want to use to pull a trailer. This is where we need to factor in the engine itself. This is also where torque and horsepower come into the equation.

Explaining torque and horsepower can get extremely technical, and we want to keep this simple and easy to understand. With that said, torque is basically the force or energy required to move something. Torque is the measurement of force,and force is measured in reference to a twisting or rotating shaft. In English terms torque is measured in pounds-feet, but is more commonly referred to as foot-pounds. So in keeping it simple let's just say that torque can be thought of as the amount of turning force it takes to move one pound of weight the distance of one foot.

Torque can be multiplied through gear ratios. You have probably heard that the higher the real axle gear ratio is the better the truck will tow. The axle ratio is the number of times the driveshaft must rotate to turn the rear wheels one time. If you have a 3.73: 1 axle ratio the drive shaft turns 3.73 times for each full turn of the axle. So in a sense torque really equals towing capacity.

Horsepower on the other hand is torque X RPM 's. Torque is howmuch work is being done, and horsepower is how fast you get the actual work done. What's interesting is an engine rated at 350 horsepower only produces that horsepower at a rated peak power RPM. This RPM rangand, for a gasoline engine, is often between 5.000 and 6.000 RPM 's. When an engine is idling the horsepower is significantly lower, and as the RPM's raise so does the horsepower. When you are towing a trailer the engine speed is more likely to be in the low to mid RPM range, 2.000 which means you probably have slightly more than half of the rated horsepower. Horsepower is measured by a dynamometer. A dynamometer puts a load on the engine and measures the amount of power the engine produces against the load at various speeds. In reality it is measuring torque in pound-feet andconverting it to horsepower. Even at the peak power RPM rated you won't really get the rated horsepower because a percentage is lost through auxiliary equipment on the engine and the process of getting it back to the wheels.

In a diesel engine the horsepower peaks at a lower RPM, and there is more torque at a lower RPM compared to a gasoline engine. This results in a diesel engine having much more power at a lower RPM, around the RPM range you will be towing at. This higher torque and higher horsepower at a lower RPM equates to better towing.

There are many other factors involved in the question of gas versus diesel that you will need to consider. What are the maintenance costs involved, cost difference between fuel types, fuel economy, your budget, and the resalevalue? Whether it's for a tow vehicle or motorhome, take your time and make a well informed decision when comparing gas to diesel.

If the question is which truck will tow more or which motorhome has more torque the diesel will win hands down, but I honestly have no complaints with our gas powered motorhome either. Especially when considering the price.

Question: Why does a diesel engine have more torque?

Mark Says: Much of the reason is in the way the engine is designed. Internal combustion engines use spark from a spark plug to ignite fuel in the combustion chamber of a gasoline engine and the high heat from compression to ignite the fuel in a diesel engine. It's more difficult to burn diesel fuel diesel engines have sohigher compression ratios resulting in more heat to ignite the fuel and more power.

Question: I have always heard that a diesel engine is much louder than a gas engine, is this true?

Mark Says: If you asked me that several years ago the answer would have been yes, but newer diesel engines are actually very quiet.

Question: You said in the article on diesel motorhome rides better, why is that?

Mark Says: Most gas motorhome chassis ' leaf spring suspension systems use. With this suspension system you will experience things like "body roll and pitch." whenever pressure is exerted against one side of the motorhome. It can be caused by a gust of wind, a shift in weight while cornering, or a passing truck. The effects of sway on a motorhomeare increased because of the height and mass of the motorhome. Diesel chassis uses an air ride suspension system. These systems keep the chassis adjusted to the proper ride height at all times by adding and releasing air as required. And the way the system is designed eliminates the pitch and roll affect you get from leaf spring suspensions, resulting in a smoother riding motorhome.

Personally, I don't think it is going to work, despite the subsidies (by governments from your tax dollars) and the heavy advertising by the manufacturers (paid for by you upon a new vehicle purchase). How to store electricity

The storage of alternatives (electric) energy, as from wind and solar sources is the real problem. Compared to gasoline or diesel, even the best batteries do not come anywhere close to the energy storage density of the liquid hydrocarbon fuels. Gasoline or diesel have a storage density of approximately 50 times that of the best alternatives. So, why not make gasoline from wind and solarpower rather than trying to store the electric energy directly?

In fact, the process of converting electricity to gasoline is very simple. It requires only limestone and water (and, of course, electricity).

Chemistry

The chemical reduction and conversion of coal to gasoline has been known and used for some 75 years. It was practiced large scale in Germany during WWII. Using limestone as carbon source, rather than coal, requires just another step in the process, also known for centuries. Upon heating, limestone disintegrates to lime (calcium oxide) and carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide is the same material obtained from burning coal.

The reaction of carbon dioxide and hydrogen at high temperatures produces hydrocarbons, i.e..> gasoline and diesel products. Hydrogen, of course, is available in unlimited amounts upon electrolysis of water. All that is needed for that is electric energy.

Technology

The nature of wind and solar electric power makes them very intermittent and unreliable energy sources. The main problem, therefore, is to find a storage system which can adapt to this variability in energy production and, simultaneously, is simple, cost-effective, and can make use of the existing technologies and infrastructure.

All the technology and processes required for the electricity-to-gasoline or diesel conversion have been perfected for many decades by now. So, why not use them to store highly variable electric power from wind and solar systems to makegasoline or diesel >?

This approach does not require costly high energy density automotive batteries (not available), or superconducting transmission lines (not available), or any other new, as yet unavailable technology. Furthermore, overall energy terms, it is no less energy efficient than batteries and does not require any change in gasoline stations, etc.

Employers should implement a rescue plan that includes procedures for:

Preventing prolonged suspension Performing rescue and treatment as quickly as possible Identifying suspension trauma signs and symptoms
Management responsibility for safety needs to give careful consideration to the methodology of rescuing a fallen. Such considerations might include:

Dialing 999 (911).-Often we think of the word ' rescue ' as calling 999 (911), but calling the local fire brigade does not constitute an effective rescue plan. Response times can be too slow, and not all fire brigades have the capability to rescue from height.

Crane Man Basket -This option has severe limitations, the main onebeing time. Target time from ' Man Down ' to being recovered needs to be no more than five to ten minutes maximum. Other restrictions and shortcomings that make this a less than ideal solution are the crane is out of action for some reason, e.g. it may be:
winded-off the driver may be away from the crane rescue by crane is limited to building facades and often is not able to provide access and rescue internal to the structure the crane man basket may be in the wrong location.

Rope Access Rescue -Rope rescue requires a Technical competency which demands a high level of training and re-training to acquire and retain this skill set. Given the limited time to complete a trained rope rescue, rescue personnel would need to be on stand-by and within close proximity to any incident. Donning the necessary kit to carry out a rope rescue can also be time consuming given that every minute the casualty is hanging is critical. Perhaps the greatest restriction is that it is a skill to which only a few would, or could be trained.

Third Party Rescue Systems -There are a number of considerations to take into account when considering third part rescue systems. In every TIME is the critical considerationfactor. The speed with which the system can be deployed and the rescue carried out is vitally important, as is the SIMPLICITY and EASE of use so that a typical operational can deploy and carry out rescue after being trained. Remember, whichever methodology you choose, the target time should be to rescue the casualty in under ten minutes.

Planning for Fall Protection must include Rescue-Having a rescue plan is just as important as having a fall protection plan. No site should have one without the other. Just putting together a fall protection program without rescue is only doing half the job. The onus is on the employer to ensure that the suspension is rescued quickly operational. That means ensuring that for anyone who works at height, there is a rescue plan.

Fallprotection must include an emergency rescue plan-How will you rescue an operative who has fallen and is suspended in a fall-arrest system? Answering some basic questions can help in developing a rescue plan.

WARNING!Anoperative who has suffered a fall and is suspended in his harness is a true medical emergency. Just because they are hanging in a harness doesn't mean you have all day to perform the rescue. Rescue has to be planned, practiced and performed quickly and effectively or the victim may very well die before the rescue finally occurs.
If you're not going to give your employees the skills to perform rescue, then you might as well not even put them in the harness at all.

Practices can save lives Perhaps just as important as having a rescue plan in place is practicing the plan before a real-life fall occurs.

Among the better tracking breeds are beagles, bloodhounds, most of the hound breeds, German shepherds and border collies. For these exercises you will need some equipment. A harness is necessary for this kind of training, since your dog will be pulling you at times. A slip chain collar won't do, since it will be tightening on his neck. The leash must be at least 30 feet long and be made of a flat fabric or leather if possible.

You will also need several leather articles that you will drop when laying the track. Old gloves or wallets would be ideal. You will also need four trailmarkers. Stakes about five feet long with streamers attached at the top will do just fine. The shoes you should wear need to be leather-soLED and not rubber or composition soLED. The reason is that the rubber or composition soles will give off an odor that could confuse the dog in the beginning lessons and wouldn't be suitable for the track.

The time of day and the weather are also important considerations in teaching your dog to track. Generally the scent will be stronger in the early morning or after sundown. Also, a damp or humid day is preferred over a dry, low humid, sunny day. And a non-windy day calm is better than a windy one. When picking the area to lay the track, avoid one in which there are unusually strong odors such as gasoline, road tar, cattle pens, etc.Choose an open area such as a meadow or field where the grass is tall and preferably damp.

Start the exercise by first putting the harness on your dog and placing him out of sight while you lay the track. Make sure you have several tasty treats in your pocket. Next, take one of your stakes and pick a starting point. Scrape the dirt with your heel, overturn it and drive the stakes into the disturbed soil. Start walking from the stakes in a straight line downwind for about 100 feet and drop the leather article. Walk a few feet further in a straight line, drop another, then walk a little further and drop the third one. Then turn around and backtrack your trail taking care that you walk the same line you originally walked.

Now while the trail is fresh take your dogfrom his "hiding place" and put on the 30-foot lead. Bring him to the stake and put him into the "down" position where his nose can smell your overturned soil and the stakes. Give him about ten feet of the lead, keeping the rest in your hand coiled up. Then gently push your dog's nose into the overturned soil so he can get the scent and hold it there for several seconds. Now, give him an excited command such as "look for it"! and point to the ground helping him to find the scent. Repeat the command along with lots of praise such as "good boy"!

Encourage your dog to walk in front of you and not to "heel". If he picks up the scent keep on giving him the full command and praise. When he finds the first article, get him to pick it up and praise him like he's just done the bestthing in the world! Give him one treat, lead him back to the stakes and repeat the process for the 2nd and 3rd article. This will be enough for the first lesson.

When your dog becomes proficient on the straight track, you can start introducing turns by driving your stakes into each turn, walk another 100 feet down that turn, drop the article and repeat the process for the other turns. Then backtrack to the first stake. Teach your dog the turns the same way you taught him the straight track. Keep on practicing these tracking exercises with your dog! When he becomes an expert, you can staple the stakes. Soon your dog will be tracking all by himself!

Oil and Natural gas, generically classified together as petroleum products, are found deep within the earth in many parts of the world. What surprises many people is that oil is actually formed from the remains of small organisms, such as algae, plankton and vegetation which lived tens or hundreds of millions of years ago in oceans and lakes. When such organisms passed away, their remains settled on the bottoms of the oceans or lakes, and were Covered by mud and sediment. The presence of oxygen with time helps organisms decay, but the small percentage of these organisms that would go on to form oil became compressed into oxygen deprived mud and rock. Over thousands of years, the pressure and heat exerted on the original layer became increasingly intense, eventually converting the organic matter into deposits of petroleum.

Such petroleum deposits are extracted by humans to be processed for use across many industries. One substantial use for such natural oil is the production of gasoline for automobiles with internal-combustion engines. But the oil extracted from underground, called crude oil, must be refined through the process of fractional distillation before it is ready to power an engine. Fractional distillation involves heating oil in a controlled environment in order to separate different kinds of hydrocarbons as their Characteristic boiling points are reached. Through this process, chemists obtain the substance we know as gasoline.

Internal combustion engines, those utilized to power most vehicles, get mechanical energy through the burning of chemical energy in a combustion chamber. Such fuel combustion activates a piston contained within a cylinder, turning a crankshaft that turns the wheels of the car using a chain or drive shaft.

Today, measures are being taken to reduce consumer reliance on natural oil due to limited supply as well as widely held environmental concerns.
